Wayne Brewer's Antique Barn - September 16th Newsletter

WHY JOSEY, THE CAR SHOW AND THE TEST

WHY JOSEY:

One may wonder why I love to watch the movie, "The Outlaw Josey Wales," the movie I mentioned in my last newsletter. I believe I could offer a college level class room course on the values of this movie, but I do not live in California nor am I a college educator; however as one of the few "Legends" around I could expound on that movie's virtues.

The one lesson for today is the one scene where Josey first meets Chief Dan George and The Chief was telling Josey the story of being sent to meet with the president in Washington. Out of that story comes the quote, "endeavor to preserve."

That phrase made an impression on me the first time I saw the movie and every time since. I have even use that as a motto and most certainly have used it in numerous sales opportunities.

Now you know why!

THE SHOW:

http://www.southsidervoice.com/car-nutz-by-big-dan-pfeiffer

This past Friday, it was Hot, Hot and sweaty, but I did attend the Southside Voices Car Show. If you would like to see me leading the 200 guests in prayer and the pledge go to the above link.

I had a great time. There were over 95 old/classic automobiles (these are not cars) of all makes and models from the old Model T to a recent horse of a Mustang (all black and chrome, polished and shiny).

Make your pick of your favorite car on the link, mine was a 1938 purple BUICK owned from the floor until today by a 93 year old, and without saying, He loves that car and it looked NEW.

I talked with Big Dan Pfeiffer and found out the next show is on Oct. 3, time to be determined.

That afternoon was a wonderful hot time and a beginning of a wonderful relationship between me, The Legend, and Car Drive-ins.

I will be interviewing on our radio program, Mr. Danny Taylor, vice-president of the Studebaker Driver Club. He is an interesting guy and look at his "STUDE."

THE TEST:

I would like to take just a brief paragraph or two to talk about a test that anyone over 50 should have, especially men.

It is a test with just 1-2 day of preparation and no study, just follow-through. Yes! I am talking about the Colon Scope or the colonoscopy.

I just successful passed my 5th such test, started at 50 and every 5 years since, so I know that I do not have any silent killers living and growing in that sensitive are of MY body, do you.

Be a BIG Man and get this test done, even Women need to step forward for this exam, it can save your life! Enough said!!!!

Got a big auction to attend so I have to cut out for now.

Wayne Brewer's Antique Barn - August 19th Newsletter

TOO MUCH RAIN AND THE DIXIE CHOPPER 1/16 MODEL

As I write this newsletter on a early Sunday morning, I have been disappointed since my last newsletter because of all the "Rain." Normally in mid-August, I have had my fill of mowing my grass and the heat of the "Dog Days" has given us all a retreat from that past time; however, 2014 is a bit different. The rainfall and the cooler temperatures have made it necessary to keep buying gas and to continue to mow, sometime more than once a week.

But, and there is always a but, this past 2 weeks we have had day rain just about every 48 hours. Now you must understand that I am a purest about my mowing and I have never liked to mow wet grass for two main reasons: one I do not like wet feet and, two, I do not like the grass to clump up.

I can solve the wet feet dislike by wearing my water proof boots, but they are not real stylish as far as that goes. But the clumping of the grass is a completely major problem because clumping grass does not dry quickly and causes the grass under the clumps to be shaded from what sun we have been getting and then may cause spots of no growth in your yard.

But back to the story, I have been unable to mow since the last newsletter and I was hoping that late this afternoon that I would get this deed completed, the sun is somewhat out and it is a nice temperature, so I may get to MOW today.

I write about mowing, because I get a lot of comments from many of you about my mowing fetish and the care and pride that I take in having the "Best Mowed Yard" in my neighborhood. I have evened started a mower website that has been read nationwide, goes to show the power of the internet and the abundance of time that many of us have.

You may be wondering, why I am writing about this, but it is my way to announce a contest on my Mower Website.

I have found the prize and it is a 1/16 scale model of my "Dream" Mower. My Dream is a 74’ cut industrial size zero-turn 33 horsepower 4-wheel drive DIXIE CHOPPER. Now that is one of my nirvana bucket list items. Link to a photo of the 1/16 scale model Dixie Chopper, which will be the prize to a contest whose details will be revealed in the next e-Newsletter:

http://www.indysmallbiz.com/dixie-chopper-model-the-bear-the-rope-and-the-brooms/

Until that time you can only lust after and yearn for the prize.

As far as I am concerned, that would be my Corvette. However, for one to own one of these they need a yard large enough to at least turn around in and since it holds 14 gallons of fuel, the need to at least to be able to refuel once a year. My Toro self propelled that I use now only needs two gallons per season. A man can have DREAMS of all sorts and that is but one of mine.

http://www.medoracoveredbridge.com

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE FANS THAT LOOKED UP THE Medora Covered Bridge web-site. From what I was told, the few days after my newsletter was one of their busiest times ever. Also a Special Thanks to those of you that joined the Association, your help is certainly appreciated.

THE BEAR, THE ROPE, AND THE BROOMS

Here is the story of the on-site auction which I attended on Saturday 8-16-2014, held by my friends the Findley Brothers and held in Scott Hall located on the Johnson Ct. Fair Grounds.

This was a wonderful auction of great ANT-I-Q’S, known to most as antiques, but I heard this in an 1938 western movie and it was said by Gabby Hayes in his role as the owner of an ANT-I-Q’S shop.

You can see in the posted picture link three recent additions to our Aunt Bette’s Collectable’s booth (guarded by the bear):

http://www.indysmallbiz.com/dixie-chopper-model-the-bear-the-rope-and-the-brooms/

If you go to my face book page there are several other pictures of newer ANT-I-Q’S.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Wayne-Brewer-Black-Hat-Auctions/398119953569411?

I fell in love with the 4’ brown Steiff like bear and I was not going to allow anyone else to add him to their collections. I was much surprised that I got it at a very reasonable cost with only one other person offering a serious bid. It now stands guard to our booth entry way and, I think, will find a new home in just a few days.

I also added a cowboy’s real, but not really old, nylon Reata Ranch Rope. This is an item that I thought was really neat although it is made from nylon instead of the normal 4 strands of rawhide.

The big story is about the 8 corned brooms and how they ended up in our booth. I had scoped out these special heavy duty natural walking stick type corned brooms and decided that I wanted all eight.

This is a common occurrence during an auction. There will be several of one item so the auctioneer sells them a high bid choice and privilege, which in you laymen terms, means the highest bidder can select from the group the one they want or they can take all of the items at the same bid price for each.

Now during most auctions it is rare for someone to take 8 of a single item. Who needs 8 old walking stick corned brooms, no one except an opportunists and a visionary like me, The Legend?

I know these items are HOT< HOT< HOT and I wanted all of them, so I lay in wait in the back of the bidders group and was ready to strike like a rattlesnake from under his rock in just a few seconds.

The auctioneer offered the 8 brooms as I had expected and I sprang from my rear vantage point with an opening bid of $10.00, $5.00 more than the auctioneer asked for.

As I continued, toward the front a second bid came in for $12.50 and I countered quickly with a bid of $15.00. It was down to just 2 of us and the other hoarder bid up to $17.50 and I quickly followed up at $20.00.

My vast bidder experience gave me the heads up knowledge to have decided while I was stalking, to strike fast and sure. The speed in which a bid is offered is paramount and I am now in the front of the pack bidding fast and evident to all that I was going to get at least the "PICK" of the 8. The second bidder dropped out for fear of paying too much.

Now the strike to the entire group was "I will take all of them at the $20.00 for each." There was a loud groan because there were others that had hoped to pay less and to get the one they wanted. The auctioneer thanks me for taking all as I grabbed up my booty and delivered them to the waiting Durango.

On the way to my Van, I had a couple of people offer me $30.00 each a gain of $10.00 each but my goal is to more than double my cost on the lot.

Always pays to not only know what you are doing but to plan on how to fight and win the battles that one chooses to fight.

Medora Covered Bridge

Wayne Brewer's Antique Barn - August 5th Newsletter

THE MEDORA COVERED BRIDGE CELEBRATION DINNER

In a few days go to this site and review event and guestbook

http://www.medoracoveredbridge.com

I think there was well over the limit of 200 people in attendance last evening attending this glorious event.

It was cool with plenty of fan-aided breezes along with very good picnic-style food. Ladonna Mitchell from Salem Country Cooking was there watching over every detail and we even had a State political candidate in attendance. I did not catch his name but he was all decked out in "Wild" orange, even his Jeep.

I had the opportunity to have 9 guests in attendance along with several high school classmates. It was amazing how I looked back in 1957; thank you, Judy for remembering to show those pictures around.

I want to thank Morris Tippen, who is the driving force behind the Friend of the Medora Covered Bridge and Area organization, for all of the hard work the local membership had to provide to create such an annual event. It is sometimes thankless work, but so appreciated by over 5000 annual visitors to the bridge site.

We encourage anyone who is interested to become a member of the Friends of the Medora Covered Bridge and Area (FMCBA). The membership fee is $10.00/year/individual and $15.00/year/family.

Checks can be mailed to: FMCBA, P.O. Box 132, Medora, IN 47260. The membership year begins July 1. Membership dues received now will go through June 30, 2015. The latest fund raising events are intended to help pay for onsite surveillance cameras and a security system to help reduce the people who like to destroy and deface our public treasures and aid getting them in to the proper kind of facilities that they deserve.

Monthly Report: The Record

We had a good month of sales from our, Aunt Bette’s Collectables Booth, located in the Southport Antique Mall. During July, we sold a total of27 items. Traffic flow for July was down as compared to previous months. I am not sure why, but there could be several reasons, that I do not want to think about. I will just take it as "Retailing Problems of Some Sort".

With the 27 items we sold in July we have now sold 300 items. This puts us on pace to have over a 25% growth in items sold for the entire year. A major feat in the economy we have and the depressed antique sales nationwide.

We must be focusing on the right item mix and price points. If it is working, we will not change it any time soon.

I attended 5 auctions during the last 3 weeks and have added some very neat items (check out my Facebook page).

I have also picked up a whole Durango full of items from a new friend and antique client located in Columbus. Karen, who is just back from Florida has several great items that we will be selling in the next several months; she was a referred friend of one of my most favorite ladies and dear friend, Joyce, also of Columbus.

THE HOOT OF THIS NEWSLETTER:

This past 7 days has been a wonderful period of time for me. I started the week with an all day training session for the Indiana Auctioneer’s Leadership academy. I have now meet the minimum of 4 class days out of 6 to qualify, so now I can lay back( no that is not me)! The session was on business planning and how to perform all the necessary stuff to make a business work, and we had 2 very, knowledgeable and informed guest speakers, a day well spent.

Later in the week, I spent some time in ordering new glasses with which to see and to be able to continue to read. I opted to go to a local discount wholesaler of glasses.

They had a very inviting offer called, BOGO. This is an old hook for "Buy one pair and get one pair free" with the sales conditions in smaller print that cannot be read until after you get the new prescription filled.

Not being a real vain person about my looks, I am what I am, and we ordered what I needed and wanted. Now the choice:

WHAT TO PAY: You see, I have Medicare Advantage with an additional rider for Vision Care, that I pay extra for. They compare their deal with my vision deal and it comes up that I could also get a third pair of glasses with my insurance because the rider did in fact have a benefit that I qualified for. WONDERFUL, I THOUGHT.

You see, with the rider and insurance the 2 pairs of top of the line low cost frames with 1 pair of prescription sun glasses, a total of 3 pairs. The gross cost was $1600.00, and after I was revived, and reviewed the gross cost, I was now told that the net cost, after all the discounts and insurance coverage was only $800.00. They had saved me $800.00.

I told them to place the order, but also told the manager that the line, "They Had Saved Me $800.00" was only their belief and not in my reality.

You can bet that next year, when I have to get a new prescription, I will pay full price for 1 pair and not go for the "HOOK" again.

Or, I might opt for antique spectacles; see this website (photos of glasses reaching back into the 1700"s), http://www.antiquespectacles.com/guide/guide_to_assist.htm, and let me know if I should opt for the Benjamin Franklin look.

WATCH For: My Lawn mowing site with the gift of a 1-16th scale Dixie Chopper model.

Weekly Report: I would like to let all know of my July 4th plans. As it happens to be on Friday of this year, it means that the holiday is the kick-off for a long weekend of, fireworks and celebrations.

Bette must work the Fourth, so she, unless called off, will earn that sought after wage of, "Double Time Pay" which is paid for holiday work. She has an expanded list of things she desperately needs so that she can continue in the life style to which she is accustomed.

Some of you may know that our wedding anniversary is July 5th. Bette and I have been married for 18 wonderful years and I have a special surprise for her on that day and evening. I will tell all about that in the next newsletter, but I know she will enjoy the evening.

For the past several years, on the 4th of July, I have always enjoyed the opportunity to re-watch the movie, Gettysburg. Gettysburg is a 1993 American war film that dramatizes the decisive Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. The film, written and directed by Ronald F. Maxwell, is a close adaptation of Michael Shaara's novel The Killer Angels. The film starred Martin Sheen, Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Kevin Conway, C. Thomas Howell, Richard Jordan, Royce D. Applegate, Richard Anderson, John Diehl, Maxwell Caulfield, Patrick Gorman, Cooper Huckabee, James Lancaster, Brian Mallon, Andrew Prine, John Rothman, Tim Scott, Morgan Sheppard, Stephen Lang and Sam Elliott. The film's story primarily focuses on the events of the battle as seen through the eyes of prominent members of both Union and Confederate armies. The film begins with spoken exposition over the image of a map that establishes the location of the battle and how the two armies converged at Gettysburg. Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia are making an offensive through Pennsylvania to lure the Union Army of the Potomac into a decisive battle that will end the war. The narration states that Confederate President Jefferson Davis has prepared a letter of peace to be delivered to the desk of Abraham Lincoln once the Army of the Potomac has been destroyed somewhere outside of Washington.

Storyline

The four and 1/4 hour depiction of the historical and personal events surrounding and including the decisive American Civil War battle features thousands of civil war re-enactors marching over the exact ground that the Federal army and the army of North Virginia fought on. The defense of the Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge are highlighted in the actual three day battle which is surrounded by the speeches of the commanding officers and the personal reflections of the fighting men. The movie is based upon the novel 'The Killer Angels."

http://www.friendsofgettysburg.org

After the movie, I also re-read the message that Abraham Lincoln gave on November 19, 1863, now known as "The Gettysburg Address."

Wow, this is a most powerful newsletter but there is much more:

MEDORA COVERED BRIDGE

I also want to write about: http://www.medoracoveredbridge.com

I write about "Our Old Bridge" once each year not only to celebrate the bridge but to advertise their web-site and to mention the Annual Fried Chicken/Ham buffet that will be held on August 2, 2014. Tickets are still available but they normally sell out this annual fund raising event, so when they sell 200 tickets they stop.

The meal will again be catered by Ladonna Mitchell's Country Cookin of Salem and the menu will be similar to last year's menu with perhaps some minor changes. Last year's menu was: fried chicken and ham, scalloped potatoes, corn, green beans, broccoli salad, grape salad, hot rolls, homemade pie, iced tea, lemonade and water.

We bring in several large fans for air flow in case the weather does not co-operate entertainment will be provided.

Terry Miller, the author of the new book: America's Covered Bridges will be here and will sign autographs.

We are also planning some daytime activities which include a Car Rally www.scenicroadrallies.com , a dog show and a euchre tournament. (all subject to change) Other activities may be added later. Contact medorabridge@gmail.com or 812.966.2491 for more information. The dinner last year was a huge success with 200 tickets being distributed. The weather was beautiful, the food was great and there were several great door prizes. Everyone enjoyed the food, the weather and especially the in the Bridge seating and all had a good time.

I will be there along with several guests and old friends from Medora call me to join in the fun. REMEMBER, RAIN OR SHINE BECAUSE THE BRIDGE IS COVERED.

My next newsletter will be dedicated to my 50th High School re-union, which was a "Hoot."

I will have more time in the next issue. My "lawn mower" site is going nuts, I need an idea for a lawn mower gift to give out for a contest for that site, any good ideas will be appreciated, and I do not think a box of dandelions would qualify as a good gift idea. I have already discarded that one, myself.

Another great month of sales leads me to plead for more items.

Weekly Report: Unexpected results and events: I received the report from our last news letter and over 10% of you visited our gallery of new antique items at:http://www.indysmallbiz.com/brewer-antique-booth

Thanks to those of you that took your time to look.

I am also up to 104 likes on my facebook page

http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Wayne-Brewer-Black-Hat-Auctions/398119953569411?  And I am told that is good -- for what they did not tell me!

I also had 14 lookers at my antique lawn mower site: http://www.indysmallbiz.com/vintage-lawn-mower-gallery This is marvelous, since I have not posted anything for several months, but this very day, I posted a picture of a 1950’s 1.5 h.p. rope pull 16" cut very old mower, that came up for bid down in Jonesville last week.

Remember! I can find just about anything one would want. Just let me know your fondest dreams of items and I will be on the hunt just like a female lion hunting to feed her pride.

I also found a new/old friend down in the scenic hills of Monroe County. Anne Duell, also a Medora High School graduate like myself, she was a few years behind me and she told me that I, the magnificent trumpet player and Medora High School Band leader, was her inspiration to also take up the trumpet and to go on and study music. She is now very accomplished and teaches music lessons and still plays in the local community. She and her husband, John Duell, live in the hills of very rural Bloomington and Anne also is a great photographer of special outdoor locations throughout southern Indiana. I want to announce her web-site because she is very talented and has some wonderful pictures.

The last two things for this letter are:

1. Next newsletter I will report on my 50th class re-union that happens on Saturday June 13, 2014. I know it will be a "hoot."

2. I also want to announce that I have a fresh supply of information from the Medora Covered Bridge and next time I will opine on that historical Longest triple span bridge in Indiana, if not the world. www.medoracoveredbridge.com

Technology vs Wayne Brewer!

Wayne Brewer's Antique Barn - June 3rd Newsletter

TECHNOLOGY VS. WAYNE BREWER

LISTEN TO ME ON SUNDAY MORNINGS AT 7:30 A.M. Call letters are WCLS, 97.7 OUT OF BLOOMINGTON IN. The show is streamed through its web site at www.wclsfm.com.

OR: You now have the option of tuning in through our new web-site for New Life Financial.www.newlifefinancialllc.com then click on "Media"

We are always adding stuff and will be opening some additional websites for the antique sides of my life, very soon, watch for them.

Report for most of May: As I write this newsletter and after taking a brief Friday afternoon nap, I just received our sales totals from our Aunt Bette’s Collectable’s booth located in the Southport Antique Mall. To date for May we have sold 42 more items bring the total items sold for 2014 to an out-standing 221 wonderful items. You can see many of the items left in our booth by visiting our face book page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Wayne-Brewer-Black-Hat-Auctions/398119953569411?

Weekly Report: this week was a week of technology and the failures thereof. As most of you recognize, our daily lives now depend upon some sort of technology, be it smart phones, modems, Wi-Fi connections, computers, i-pods and many others.

In fact, even the Black Hatted Legend is moving into that world but even Murphy’s laws apply. That world is sold as always being available but that is not the case, as I found out this week.

I have touted my smart phone and how useful it is, but last Saturday afternoon, it downloaded something (we never know what they are downloading, just that it has to happen) and after the download it stopped working. It would not go forward, backward, off, but it was on, just not working.

Remember! Saturday of a holiday weekend nothing happens over a holiday weekend until Tuesday morning. So I had to wait (you see that is the price we have to pay for all this technology).

Normally that would not be a problem because I have both a laptop and an I-pad that I can receive message on, except all my e-mail addresses decided to disappear. Outlook, my service, which I have used for years, just disappeared. Poof it was gone! Once again wait till Tuesday morning.

I did have an very enjoyable weekend, Bette was called off on one shift and only had to work a half shift on Saturday so Monday was a complete rest day—NO TECHNOLOGY!

My message here is if one depends on something no matter what it is at some point in time, most often, when we need it the most, it will not work. So always keep Murphy and his laws in mind and have a back-up plan.

This whole story is to tell everyone about Tuesday morning. At 9:00 I was one of the first into the local ATT office and was greeted by Tim, who was expecting to sell something. I held out my smart phone and said, "it will not work." He was disappointed but looked at me and then the smart phone and took the smart phone, took it out of the protective case, un-snapped the back, took out the battery, slipped out the sim card, shot it with a puff of canned air, re-installed everything and in less than 30 seconds, my smart phone worked. Had I only known!

My computer was next; by 10:00, I was at the shop "Geek In Pink." Laura, yes! I know her because she reads this newsletter and they do great fast computer repairs at very reasonable prices --www.geekinpink.com-- 4800 W Smith Valley Rd, Greenwood, IN. She and her main guy, Alan got me back up and running, in short order.

Yes I know this is a newsletter about my antiques and my stuff, but sometime a guy just has to talk or in this case write.

I will be attending a long awaited auction on Saturday that is a Findley Brotherswww.findleyauctioneers.com

This auction is for an old general store, and I hope it lives up to my high expectations of quality stuff at good bid prices, I will report next time or you can check my Face-book page of pictures.

!!!!!This just in!!!!! Here are pictures of the items I picked up over the weekend:

LISTEN TO ME ON SUNDAY MORNINGS AT 7:30 A.M. Call letters are WCLS, 97.7 OUT OF BLOOMINGTON IN. The station is streamed through its web site at http://www.wclsfm.com. (Once onto the site there is a listen-live button.)

If one has a smart phone, you can download the tune-in radio app. Once done, they can do a #1; station search and

#2; WCLS will come up and they can mark it as a favorite. Then the show can be heard through any smart phone.

I also will be archiving the shows on our new web site but for the time being it will be archived on our "Big Green Barn’ site. This site should be up by the next newsletter.

The new show airs at 7:30 a.m. on each Sunday morning, early, I know, but I have to start someplace until the hordes demand a better air time.
